Spellers Who Are Changing the World

For decades, many nonspeaking autistic people were told they had little to say — and the world believed it. Then a MOVEMENT began, driven by people who found their voices not through speech, but through LETTERBOARDS and keyboards. SPELLERS are nonspeaking or minimally speaking individuals who communicate by pointing to letters, one at a time, to form words, sentences, and ideas. This method is often called Spelling to Communicate, or S2C. The PRESUMPTION of COMPETENCE — the belief that every person has something intelligent to say — is the foundation of this entire approach. These spellers are not just learning to communicate; they are reshaping how the world understands intelligence, disability, and human potential.
