The Mighty Mitochondria

Every cell in your body contains tiny structures called ORGANELLES, and among the most important is the MITOCHONDRION — the singular form of MITOCHONDRIA. These organelles are often called the powerhouses of the cell because they generate the energy your body needs to function. Mitochondria are found in almost every type of human cell, with the notable exception of red blood cells. The number of mitochondria in a cell varies dramatically depending on how ENERGY-DEMANDING that cell's job is — muscle cells and liver cells, for example, can contain thousands of them.
