UPWARD BOUND is one of the oldest and most respected college preparation programs in the United States. It was created in 1964 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's WAR ON POVERTY, a sweeping set of federal initiatives designed to expand economic opportunity for all Americans. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of EDUCATION and administered through colleges and universities across the country. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and students who would be the first in their families to attend college — a group commonly called FIRST-GENERATION college students. Its founding MISSION was bold and clear: give every motivated young person, regardless of background, a real shot at higher education. Today, more than 800 Upward Bound projects operate nationwide, touching the lives of tens of thousands of students every year.
