The History of Family Farming

Long before grocery stores existed, almost every family grew its own food. The earliest known farming began around 10,000 BCE in a region of the Middle East called the FERTILE CRESCENT, where rivers like the Tigris and Euphrates made the soil rich and productive. Ancient farmers there learned to grow WHEAT, barley, and lentils — crops that could be stored through winter and traded with neighbors. This shift from hunting and gathering to planting crops is called the NEOLITHIC (nee-uh-LITH-ik) REVOLUTION, and it is one of the most significant turning points in all of human history. Family farming did not just feed people — it built permanent SETTLEMENTS, created early economies, and laid the groundwork for every civilization that followed. Understanding where farming began helps us see why land, food, and community are still deeply connected today.
