The History of Globalization

GLOBALIZATION is the process by which the world's economies, cultures, and governments become more deeply connected over time. It is not a new idea — people have been trading, migrating, and exchanging ideas across vast distances for thousands of years. The ancient SILK ROAD, a network of trade routes stretching from China to the Mediterranean, is one of the earliest and most powerful examples of globalization in action. Merchants carried silk, spices, and precious goods across deserts and mountains, but they also spread languages, religions, and technologies between very different CIVILIZATIONS. Understanding globalization means understanding that geography — the shape of the land, the location of rivers, and the position of coastlines — determined which peoples connected and which stayed isolated. Every map you read today is partly a record of those ancient connections.
